Description

AIS - Collection - Single Seed Descent by NASC

Arabidopsis Information Service

AIS began as a newsletter devoted to the field of Arabidopsis Research. In 1987 Albert Kranz was encouraged by his American and European colleagues, James Bonner, Elliot Meyerwitz, Chris Somerville, Paul Williams, Michael Jacobs, and Maarten Koornneef to issue a complete stock list of the genetic resources available at the time through the AIS. This was published in Vol.24.

The original ecotypes from this list are available as either bulk lines or single seed descent from NASC and ABRC. The difference is in the way they were sown and bulked when originally received.

SIngle Seed Descent by ABRC

Bulk Lines

The Bulk Lines are generated by sowing a large number of the original seeds donated and collecting the 'mixed' population in order to maintain variation.

Single Seed Descent Lines

We also harvest one 'founder' plant individually, plant some of this seed and let it self to generate enough seed for distribution purposes. This single seed line represents a genetically uniform line that is represetative of one genotype from the original collected population.

SIngle Seed Ecotypes Bulked Separately by NASC and ABRC

The AIS single seed ecotypes were isolated and bulked separately by both stock centres, NASC and ABRC. For this reason single seed descent lines have different stock numbers at the two centres.
